Portsmouth and Dover New Hampshire Trolleys

Maps and Details on the Interurbans Systems in New England

Exeter TrolleyThis area of New Hampshire had a colorful history of streetcar transportation and for a while, one could travel all the way from New York City to Augusta and Waterville, Maine via an electric interurban system! The Exeter, Hampton & Amesbury Street Railway was the catalyst for trolley development in the region and served as the nucleus around which many of the lines later were merged. In addition, the Exeter, Hampton & Amesbury built a casino at Hampton Beach, which held billiard and bowling rooms, fruit and confectionery stands, a spacious dining room and a large hall for conventions, outings and dances.

In 1900, three operating companies: Portsmouth, Great Bay & Dover; Portsmouth, Exeter & Newmarket; and Haverhill & Newton Street were organized and consolidated as part of the Massachusetts Construction Co. creatiing a unified interurban transportation system in the region. Be sure to visit the Exeter, Hampton & Amesbury Street Railway site (listed below as well) for detailed info.
